Beginners who want to master portal composition without tech overwhelm

A portal image is an image within an image - where one world, scene, or idea is visible through another.
Examples include:
- A smartphone screen showing a distant place or concept.
- A mirror reflecting an alternate self or hidden world.
- A window revealing what’s outside or what’s possible.
- A laptop displaying innovation, technology, or imagination.
Portal images use contrast, composition, and storytelling to make viewers pause and think. They’re perfect for marketing, education, storytelling, and conceptual art.
Penelope is your AI creative mentor for portal imagery. She helps you:
Brainstorm new portal concepts from any theme.
Write perfectly structured prompts for Midjourney or Ideogram.
Troubleshoot image issues (duplicates, blurriness, wrong portal focus).
Learn object-forward composition - how to describe the portal and its world clearly.
Refine brand or campaign consistency across images.
The object-forward principle means starting your prompt with the portal object itself - before describing what’s inside it or around it.
Example:
A smartphone screen displaying a coral reef, held in a person’s hand on a wooden desk.
This ensures the AI clearly separates the two scenes - the main environment and the image within.
Think about the message or emotion you want to convey:
- Screens (phones, laptops) – technology, connection, innovation.
- Mirrors – reflection, identity, truth, self-discovery.
- Windows/Doors – opportunity, perspective, transition.
- Frames – memory, legacy, storytelling.
- Natural Portals – balance, harmony, or wonder of nature.
Penelope can suggest specific types once you describe your mood or theme.
Portal compositions can elevate brand and marketing visuals by creating depth and narrative. Common uses include:
- Product marketing: phone or laptop screens showing the experience a product delivers.
- Corporate storytelling: a window showing growth, progress, or sustainability.
- Education: a book, tablet, or window revealing knowledge or global impact.
- Social media: scroll-stopping visuals that combine realism with creative metaphor.
Midjourney: prefers short, clear, descriptive prompts without style references. Example: A mirror reflecting a city skyline at sunset, modern bedroom interior, warm light.
Ideogram: thrives on full sentences with natural flow and can include style or tone. Example: A large rectangular mirror reflecting a glowing city skyline at sunset, inside a modern apartment with warm, cinematic lighting.
If your image isn’t turning out right:
- Duplicate or mirrored content? Remove extra style words and simplify the structure.
- Blurry or unclear portal? Add specific visual details (color, shape, light source).
- Merged scenes? Use clear spatial cues like “inside,” “on,” or “visible through.”
- Scale issues? Describe the object size (“small phone,” “large wall mirror”).
Use portals to visualize contrast or transformation:
- A laptop showing future innovation while the desk shows present work.
- A phone displaying customer experience while the environment shows daily life.
- A window framing sustainability or growth.
Each image becomes a visual metaphor for your message.
1. Tell her which platform you’re using - Midjourney, Ideogram, or both.
2. Choose your mode: Brainstorm a concept or Construct/Troubleshoot a prompt.
3. Answer her diagnostic questions about the theme, object, and story.
She’ll build or refine your prompt - and explain why it works.
